
Aerialist shoulder care: what your overhead training is asking of you

I spent twelve years hanging from things for a living, so let me say what your coach may be too kind to: overhead hanging load is the most demanding thing you can ask of a shoulder, and most aerialists do their strength homework religiously while doing recovery homework never. This is the recovery half, from someone whose shoulders have done both the performing and the paying for it.
What hanging actually loads
A shoulder under hanging load is doing three jobs at once: the rotator cuff is centring the humeral head so it doesn't ride up into the joint; the scapular muscles — serratus anterior, lower traps — are controlling the shoulder blade's rotation; and the lats and pecs are producing the actual force. Training builds the third system fast. The first two, which keep the joint alive, develop slower — and fatigue faster. Most aerial shoulder trouble is that gap.
Early warning signs worth respecting
- A pinch at the front of the shoulder in straight-arm hangs or during beats — often the biceps tendon or cuff complaining about a poorly-centred joint.
- "Dead arm" heaviness after training rather than honest muscle soreness.
- Clicking that has recently acquired a feeling — painless clicks are usually nothing; new painful ones aren't.
- One shoulder blade winging or sitting differently in photos of your straddle-ups.
- Needing to shrug into your hangs because active engagement has stopped feeling available.
None of these means stop training. All of them mean the recovery side of the ledger is overdrawn — and that pushing through is how a niggle becomes a six-month cuff problem.
The recovery work that actually moves the needle
First, tissue quality: the lats, pecs, upper traps and forearms of a training aerialist accumulate density and trigger points that steal range and disrupt mechanics. Regular sports or remedial massage — fortnightly in heavy blocks — keeps those structures supple enough that your engagement work can actually happen. Second, targeted strength for the quiet systems: cuff work at multiple angles, serratus and lower-trap control. Third — and this is the hypermobile-performer trap — stability before more range. Many aerialists chase ever-deeper shoulder flexibility while the real limiter is control of what they already have.

Why I treat performers differently
When an aerialist tells me their shoulder pinches in a meathook but not a straight-arm hang, I don't need a translation — I've done both. That shared vocabulary changes treatment: I know which structures each apparatus punishes, I can watch you load a position and see where the mechanics leak, and I treat around show and training schedules — including coming to the studio or theatre. Between shows, deep work is timed so you're never on stage inside the 48-hour adaptation window.

Leave 48 hours between deep tissue work and performing. Inside that window, lighter flushing work and assisted stretching are fine and often helpful.
Should I stretch my shoulders more for aerial?
Only if a genuine range deficit is limiting a specific skill — and for hypermobile performers, almost never. Most aerial shoulder pain is a control-and-capacity problem wearing a flexibility costume.
