Deep forearm work into an athlete's calf during a sports massage
About this session

What sports massage actually does

Sports massage targets the muscle groups your training loads most. Before an event it is brisk and preparatory; after, it is about flushing, releasing and restoring length so you recover sooner and train again with less stiffness.

Because I also coach movement, I will tell you when what you are feeling is a massage problem and when it is a loading or mobility problem — and what to do about either.

What happens in a session

Three parts, every time.

  1. 1

    Where it loads

We talk through your training week and where you feel it.

  2. 2

    Targeted work

Deep, specific work on the loaded tissue — calves, hips, glutes, shoulders — whatever your sport demands.

  3. 3

    Move it

Assisted stretch and a couple of drills to take into your next session.

Who this helps

Who books sports massage — and why

Runners and endurance athletes

Calves, hamstrings, hip flexors and ITB-adjacent structures take a rhythmic hammering. Fortnightly sports massage through a training block keeps stride mechanics honest and flags the hot spots — the calf that's a week from pulling — while they're cheap to fix.

Strength and CrossFit athletes

Heavy pressing and pulling build dense, restricted tissue through lats, pecs, forearms and glutes. Sports massage restores the glide and overhead range that lets you keep positions strong — shoulders especially thank you.

Performers and dancers in season

Show schedules are training loads with costumes. I time deep work outside the 48-hour performance window and come to the studio or theatre, so recovery fits the run instead of fighting it.

In the session

Techniques I actually use

  • Pre-event stimulation

Brisk, light work in the 48 hours before competition — tissue awake, nothing structurally changed.

  • Post-event flushing

Moderate-depth circulatory work in the DOMS window to reduce soreness and restore range sooner.

  • Deep specific work

Between events: focused treatment of the muscle groups your sport loads hardest.

  • Movement screening

A coach's eye on how you move — I'll tell you when it's a massage problem and when it's a loading problem.

Questions

Before you book

Before or after training?

Both work, for different reasons. Before an event: lighter, brisk, 24–48 hours out. After: deeper, within a day or two, to speed recovery.

Will it hurt?

Sports work is firm but it should never make you brace. I work to the edge of what is useful, not past it — tell me and I adjust.
